What is anal HPV and why is it important to detect it?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. While many people clear it naturally, certain high-risk genotypes can cause precancerous lesions in the anal canal which, if not detected and treated in time, can progress to anal cancer.

Anal HPV can appear as visible warts (condylomas), but in many cases it causes no visible symptoms. The only way to detect internal precancerous lesions is through specialized tests such as High-Resolution Anoscopy, anal cytology or an HPV PCR test.

At ProctoMed we have the most complete HPV Detection and Management Clinic in Quintana Roo, offering comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of anal HPV infection and its complications.

Anal Pap Smear (Cytology)

A test to detect cell changes in the anal canal. Similar to a cervical Pap smear, it identifies precancerous changes.

  • Recommended for people with HPV or a weakened immune system
  • Quick, with no special preparation
🩹
Targeted Anal Biopsies

Precise biopsies of suspicious lesions identified during HRA, for histological confirmation.

💉
HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine protects against the most common and high-risk genotypes. Available for men and women.

  • Recommended for people with active HPV
  • Also preventive for people without infection

High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA)

HRA is the anal equivalent of a gynecological colposcopy: it allows high-magnification visualization of the tissue of the anal canal, identification of HPV-related precancerous lesions and precise targeted biopsies.

Unlike a simple anoscopy, HRA uses a high-resolution colposcope and contrast solutions that make visible lesions that would otherwise be impossible to detect. It is the only method that allows a reliable early diagnosis of anal cancer.

Simple anoscopy
Direct view
Only detects lesions visible to the naked eye. Does not identify internal precancerous lesions.
HRA anoscopy
High magnification
Detects microscopic lesions, applies contrast and allows precise targeted biopsies.

What HRA can detect and treat

High-Resolution Anoscopy is the most advanced test for the timely detection of anal cancer. It allows intervention before lesions progress.

  • Detects low- and high-grade intraepithelial lesions
  • Shows HPV-related cell changes not visible to the eye
  • Allows targeted anal biopsies
  • Especially important for patients with HPV or anal STIs
  • Outpatient procedure, no special preparation
  • No hospital stay or general anesthesia
Unique availability: HRA is not available at any other practice in Quintana Roo. Dr. Cabrera and Dr. Suárez are the only specialists in the state certified to perform it.

Questions about HPV and HRA

HRA is indicated for people diagnosed with anal HPV, a history of anal warts, immunocompromised patients (HIV positive), men who have sex with men, women with cervical dysplasia or genital HPV, and anyone with an abnormal anal Pap smear.
HRA is an outpatient procedure that does not require general anesthesia. There may be mild discomfort during the test, similar to a simple anoscopy. Most patients tolerate it well and return to their activities the same day.
No special preparation or fasting is required. We only recommend having had a natural bowel movement that day. No enema is needed. Come to the office as usual and Dr. Cabrera or Dr. Suárez will give you instructions at the time.
There is no specific antiviral that eliminates HPV. However, the immune system clears the infection in most cases. What can be treated are its manifestations: warts, precancerous lesions and cancer. The vaccine prevents new infections.
Yes. The HPV vaccine is still beneficial even for people who already have the infection, since it protects against genotypes they have not yet acquired. The doctor will assess whether you are a candidate and which vaccination schedule is best for you.
Treatment removes the visible warts, but HPV can remain latent. Recurrences are possible if the virus is not cleared by the immune system. That’s why regular follow-up is important, especially for immunocompromised patients.
